Mr. A.K. Balyan,
GM- Basin Manager (CBM-BPM), ONGC, is the Patron of Kolkatta Section of
the SPG.
Kolkata Section
Attains significance from Hydrocarbon points of view because of CBM exploration
activities being carried out by ONGC in Bihar and West Bengal with Kolkata
as its base office. CBM is emerging as a prominent alternative source
of energy in the world and India stands at sixth rank in the world in
CBM resources after USA, USSR, China, Australia and Canada.
SPG plans to
start more Regional Sections across the nation to promote interaction
amongst geoscientists and facilitate the practice of petroleum geophysics.

Y.B. Sinha, Director (E), ONGC, with the crew at the time of
spudding of well Kharkhari-1, Vindhyan basin |
|
| spudded
the fifth well in Madhya Pradesh Kharkhari-1, at an auspicious
time on March 11, 2002, the third in the Son Valley belt of
Vindhyan Basin, beginning a fresh spell of exploration in
the Frontier Basin.
Speaking
to the media, Mr. Sinha recalled the earlier efforts made
by ONGC in the Frontier Basin.
Speaking to the media, Mr Sinha recalled the earlier efforts
made by ONGC in the Basin. The first well, Jabera-1 showed
an uneconomical flow of gas, while Damoh drew a blank. However,
these are not a deterrent to further exploration, since ONGC,
as a National OIL Company has a moral and social obligation
to harness all available hydrocarbon resources in the country.
Mr. D.K. Pandey, Basin |
Manager
(Frontier Basin), explained that exploration started in Madhya
Pradesh in the 1960’s with 15000 metres of drilling
spread over four wells. Kharkari-1 well which is now under
drilling has most parameters on its side to make news.
IMD,
Dehradun conducted two excellent courses for
Geoscientists
Institute
of Management Development, Dehradun organized two excellent
courses one on ‘Well Log Applications’ by Mr.
Oberto Serra and other on ‘Exploration Concepts in Carbonates’
by Mr. Lorenzo Serra, the globally renowned experts in their
respective field. Around sixty geoscientists were benefitted
from these courses. Both the courses were well received and
appreciated by the participants. |
